What is a Moving Container Company?

A moving container company is a service provider that offers you a more affordable and convenient way to move when compared to hiring a full-service team or renting a truck and moving on your own. When you book a moving date with a moving container company, you’re temporarily renting a weatherproof moving container to use in lieu of a moving truck or team. You can think of a moving container in much the same way as a portable storage unit.

Though the specific process you’ll go through when you move with a container service can vary depending on the company you choose, you’ll almost always go through the following basic steps.

    • Book your move: Moving container services often allow you to book your move online after entering a little information on your move and your needs as a mover. Depending on the circumstances of your move, you may be able to view pricing online instantly, or you may need to connect with a representative to get your pricing per container.
    • Load your container: If the moving container price works with your budget, book your moving date. You can usually book multiple containers if you have a larger home. When your moving date arrives, your moving container service will drop off your containers at your home. Your container service will provide you with a loading window, typically between three days to one month. You’ll fill the container with all of your furniture and household goods during this time. Moving containers are specifically designed to withstand the elements, so you don’t need to worry about rushing to load them if inclement weather is in the forecast.
    • Wait for the container to be picked up: After you complete your loading process, your moving container company will return to your property to pick up your container. They will then load it onto a truck and deliver it to your new home. The amount of time it will take for your container to arrive will vary depending on the number of containers you have, the company you work with, and the distance your containers need to travel. If you cannot have the container delivered directly to your home because your move-out and move-in dates don’t line up, your container service can deliver it to a temporary storage facility.
    • Unload your container: When your container arrives at your property, you’ll unload all of your things into your new home. Like when you loaded your things, you’ll have a window of time to unload, so there’s no reason to rush.
    • Wait for the container to be picked up: After you finish unloading the container, the moving container service will return and remove the container from your property. If you need more time or you’d like to have temporary storage on your property, you can usually extend your rental by the month.

Both PODS and U-Haul U-Box operate as moving container services, which means that they both follow the same basic rental process.

    What is PODS?

PODS (short for “Portable On-Demand Storage”) was one of the pioneering companies of the moving container industry. PODS has become so ubiquitous that competing moving container services sometimes use the term “pod” and “moving container” interchangeably.

PODS was one of the first moving container services in the industry, founded in 1998 to expand a family’s storage business. Peter Warhurst, the founder of PODS, envisioned an easier way to move for both families and moving professionals, which led him to develop the first PODS moving container. The container was designed to be easily stored both onsite and in a storage facility and to provide moving professionals with an easier way to load belongings without risking injury.

Today, PODS is available in most parts of the country and can deliver to both the United States and Canada. The company also provides corporate and construction-related shipments alongside residential moves.

    What is U-Haul U-Box?

If you’ve ever moved in the past, chances are high that you’re already familiar with U-Haul. U-Haul is one of the largest moving equipment and storage rental companies in the United States, with more than 19,500 employees and an annual revenue of about $4.54 billion. U-Haul was founded in 1945 by Leonard Shoen and his wife, Anna Mary Carty. By 1955, the company had expanded to maintain a fleet of 10,000 trucks, becoming a household name.

U-Box is U-Haul’s new moving container service, branching off from the original U-Haul brand to provide expanded services. U-Box provides multiple container options and allows you to customize your services by adding professional loading and storage services if you choose. Like other moving container companies, you can also choose to keep your container at your home to provide temporary onsite storage. Unlike many moving container companies, U-Haul U-Box is authorized to provide international moving container services, meaning that you won’t be limited to moves within the United States.

    Container Options

The most important feature you should consider when you choose which moving container service you want to work with is the type and quality of container that the company offers. PODS offers multiple container sizes and allows you to customize your shipment to ensure that you’re getting the best combination of space to fit your unique household.

PODS container options are as follows:

    • Small: PODS’ small moving containers measure 8′ x 7′ x 8′ and provide you with 402 cubic square feet of storage space. PODS says that this size container is comparable to a 5’x10′ storage unit or 10′ rental truck. This size space can be ideal for smaller homes and apartments and is particularly popular for college moving needs.
    • Medium: PODS’ medium-sized containers measure 12′ x 8′ x 8′ and provide you with 689 cubic square feet of storage space. PODS says that this size container is comparable to a 10’x10′ storage unit or 15′ rental truck. This size container holds about two to three rooms’ worth of furniture. However, the medium container is only available on local moving processes.
    • Large: PODS’ largest containers measure 16′ x 8′ x 8′ and provide you with 835 cubic square feet of storage space. PODS says that this container’s size is comparable to a 10’x15′ storage unit or a 20′ rental truck. This container holds about three to four rooms’ worth of furniture, making it ideal for a larger apartment or a medium-sized home.

Unlike PODS, U-Box only offers a single-size container. U-Box’s containers measure about 7.9’ x 4.67’ x 6.95’ and provide you with 257 cubic feet of space. Each U-Box container can hold about 2,000 pounds worth of household goods. While each of U-Box’s containers are smaller when compared to PODS’ options, you can schedule as many containers for your move as you need.

U-Box also offers an online calculator that you can use to estimate how many containers you’ll need based on the size of your home and the amount of furniture you need to move. Worried about paying for containers that you don’t end up using? Don’t be—U-Box will fully refund you for any containers you schedule but don’t use during your moving process.

Moving container services use a variety of factors when they calculate how much you’ll pay for each moving container you rent. Some of the primary factors that will play a role in the total price you’ll pay for your moving container service include the following.

    • The total distance you’re traveling
    • The number and size of containers you’re moving with
    • The time of year when you’re moving
    • How early you book your moving container

You can’t be sure how much you’ll pay for your moving container services until you get a quote from the company you want to work with. In order to help you get a better idea of what you might pay for your moving container services when you book with PODS and U-Haul U-Box, we’ve broken down their pricing and services.

Read on to see the pricing quotes we were provided with when we contacted both companies. Each price quote was requested eight weeks in advance of the requested moving date and includes one month of storage and delivery. PODS pricing represents one of each container listed.

    Customer Sentiment

Knowing a company’s online reputation is crucial for the research process. While all moving container services and moving companies will have both negative and positive reviews, the overall customer sentiment you see on third-party review platforms can give you a better idea of the type of service quality that you’re likely to receive.

PODS reviews are mixed depending on the platform you use to compare customer experiences. Customers who reviewed PODS on the company’s Better Business Bureau (BBB) profile awarded PODS an average rating of 1.08 out of 5 stars. However, customers on Trustpilot reported overall positive experiences, awarding PODS an average rating of 3.8 out of 5 stars. PODS is currently not BBB accredited, but the company has awarded PODS a B+ grade for its service and advertising compliance.

Customers who reported that they had a positive interaction with PODS’ team regularly complimented the company’s loading and scheduling teams. Customers regularly reported that PODS team members were careful and courteous when loading and proactive in informing the customers if there was going to be any delay in their arrivals and departures.

Everyone we dealt with from customer service to the drivers were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Pickup and delivery of the storage unit was on time except once and then it was an hour early for the final pickup of the empty pod. Not a problem at all. After more than 14 months in storage our possessions were in perfect condition, this included a number of art pieces and collectibles that would have been destroyed by any exposure to moisture. — Michael C., 09/21/2019, BBB.org, 5.0 stars.

Managing a move across the country was made very easy by working with PODS. Easy to schedule, manage and update via their website. Very friendly and helpful as we changed our plans, # of PODS needed, and sizes several times. Highly recommend using them!  — Trustpilot user “Kris,” 01/16/2022, Trustpilot, 5.0 stars.

Complaints made against PODS frequently refer to a disconnect between the company’s billing and service teams. Multiple PODS customers claimed that they were charged multiple times or billed incorrectly for their order and that the process of being refunded was lengthy and frustrating.

PODS somehow created a second order for me, deleted my original order (along with my $5,200 payment) & I still can’t get through to anyone who can actually help me. I’ve spent over 4 hours on multiple calls & pods.com ‘chat’. WORST customer service ever, they literally can’t help me or send me to anyone who can help me. This is so frustrating. — Kevin N., 01/03/2022, BBB.org, 1.0 star.

My container was picked up on 12/18 and still has not reached the final destination almost 2 weeks later! Their customer service will say the POD is in transit but has no idea where the actual location of the driver is. They said there is a 20 day transit window that I was not told about until after they picked up! I have now been in my new house without my belongings for over 10 days! — Shelia H., 12/30/2021, BBB.org, 1.0 star.

Customers have awarded U-Haul International (the parent company that operates and maintains U-Box) an average rating of 1.06 out of 5.0 stars on the company’s Better Business Bureau profile page. Reviews on the company’s Trustpilot page are equally as negative, with the average U-Haul customer giving the company a rating of 1.3 out of 5.0 stars. However, U-Haul is a BBB-accredited business, and the company has received the highest possible BBB grade of A+. While the BBB is not a government agency, this high rating may indicate that you’re more likely to receive a satisfactory resolution with U-Box.

Customers who rated U-Haul highly frequently complemented the company’s customer service team. Almost every positive review mentioned that the representatives they spoke with were courteous and did everything they could to help resolve any issues the customer ran into.

Spoke with a representative [named] Ashley from Pennsylvania and she was absolutely awesome. Very helpful, patient, and polite. U-Haul picked a winner when they hired her. Thanks Ashley for everything. — Amy R., 06/2021, Trustpilot, 5.0 stars.

…When I called customer service, they were extremely kind and professional, zero complaints. I talked to 3 different people from customer service and all of them were really great. — Trustpilot user “Jamillet,” 12/16/2021, Trustpilot, 5.0 stars.

Unfortunately, reviews indicate that this professionalism and satisfaction did not extend to U-Haul’s services, particularly when U-Box services were used. Multiple customers complained that their U-Box delivery was late or misplaced and that U-Haul’s resolutions department did little to help them.

Worst experience ever. Never told me what time they were dropping off the box…I had already set a day for them to pick it up. Old landlord had to complain to me to know that they never picked it up. Now at my destination, delayed by 8 days because they were late picking it up, they want me to pay 80$ to have the box delivered after I paid all fees online. — Luke K., 11/27/2021, Trustpilot, 1.0 star.

Incredibly unreliable. Promised me a car hauler right up to the day of my move then called me and told me they didn’t have any available. I couldn’t find any alternatives on that short of notice and had to sell my vehicle at a big loss. — Yelnik M., 01/25/2022, BBB.org, 1.0 star.

    PODS vs U-Haul U-Box FAQs

    Is U-Box or PODS better?

The best moving container service will vary depending on your unique situation. However, we recommend working with PODS, as PODS offers sturdier containers and more affordable pricing on many moving routes. You might also want to get a quote from other competing moving services like U-Pack before booking your moving date.

Will a king size bed fit in a UBOX?

Yes, a U-Box is large enough to support a king-sized mattress. However, you cannot fit any larger sized bed in a U-Box, which is a limitation of the company’s single-sized container. If you own a larger bed or need to move a larger item, you should consider getting pricing for PODS’ largest-sized container.

    Is U-Pack owned by U-Haul?

No, U-Pack is not owned by U-Haul. However, U-Box is a subsidiary of U-Haul.
