TaskRabbit is a centralized online hub used to hire helpers for one-time, moving-related tasks (and more). Its scope is now limited to major urban areas, but this availability is expanding. TaskRabbit workers – or taskers – are fully vetted, and are cheaper than hiring workers from a moving company.

    Taskrabbit’s Transparency

TaskRabbit’s interface is as easy to use as it gets. The simple, three-step process to booking a job boils their independent contractors down to the essential facts. That is their hourly rates, their abilities, and their customer reviews.

    Pricing

TaskRabbit’s price points are advertised at hourly rates and range from $17 to $80 per man-hour. This rate is shown on each worker’s page. It is made to be the first thing a client sees when browsing the site so that no one stuck in negotiations if the price is not agreeable up-front. Most professional movers will charge far more than TaskRabbit rates – typically $80 to $100 per hour for two movers, minimum. Many Taskers will advertise their prices at a more premium rate if moving heavy furniture. Taskers will charge between $30 and $70 per man-hour for moving-related tasks.  This makes moving on a budget no problem, at least for small moves.

You should note that Taskers are free to set their own price within the $17 to $80 window for service. However, the average price is set by the average of the market city in which you plan to use TaskRabbit.

    Communication

Clarity varies between Taskers, as does quality. Since all Taskers are solo service providers and not employees, their readiness or ability to communicate with clients may not always be up to snuff.

The ease of reading each Tasker’s profile does a fair amount to make up for this. Profiles will list what tasks or moving jobs each is proficient in, along with their transportation capabilities and whatever extra tools they can bring to a given job. This is doubly important to know up-front when shopping around for delivery services or help with furniture assembly.

    Hiring Processes

As a prospective client, hiring a Tasker is an easy process. Simply enter your job type, pickup, and delivery addresses, expected hours of the job, and a brief job description to see compatible workers. Once you have selected a Tasker, you can book an available time. Since this service is only available in select high-population areas at the moment, booking last-minute may not be an option. Each area will have more workers, but high demand could prevent you from getting the help you need. Making an account at taskrabbit.com is necessary in order to use this service. Downloading the TaskRabbit app makes the process far more streamlined if you’re using your phone to book.

    Policies

The major con with this service is the lack of insurance for your possessions and the workers involved. Full-service movers will come equipped with workers’ compensation and released liability insurances, but that will not be the case when hiring Taskers. TaskRabbit itself offers a “Happiness Pledge” which states that it might reimburse clients for any broken furniture. This is a fallback if an agreement cannot be reached with the worker, but should not be relied upon. There is a possibility that your renters’ or homeowners’ insurance will cover damages, but you should consult your insurance provider before assuming this.

Clients may also be on the hook for cancellation fees if they cancel a job within 24 hours of its scheduled start time. This is usually equal to one hour’s pay for their selected Tasker. During the pandemic however, no fees are charged if the job has been canceled due to illness.

    Pricing

Pricing varies between Taskers and their home markets, but you will be paying between $17 and $80 per man hour for most jobs. Elite taskers – those with many positive reviews and jobs completed – will come at a higher price point.

Certain tasks, like IKEA furniture assembly, may be billed on a “per item” basis, rather than an hourly rate.

Moving-related services, like packing and unpacking, TV mounting, or hauling, will be in the middle of the above range. For dedicated moving (think loading and unloading a truck), you may be paying upwards of $60, depending on a number of factors. If you live in a higher floor walk-up, some workers may opt to charge extra fees. This should be outlined in their profiles, but it is still something to be wary of.

Payments can primarily be made to your workers through the TaskRabbit app or website. PayPal, cash, or check are also options for wary clients, but the TaskRabbit payment platform has shown to be secure.

    Reputation

As a rule, TaskRabbit thoroughly vets all of its workers. Much like Uber, they conduct background checks and ID verification on all contractors who get work on their platform. Of course, there are going to be horror stories that come out of any customer service-oriented field, but this provider has received generally favorable reviews across the board.

Their contractors generally seem motivated and professional. After all, lower ratings lead to fewer jobs, which hurts their bottom line. A standard complaint is that consumer protection is somewhat minimal due to a lack of insurance coverage. The centralized avenue for filing grievances makes this a far better place than Craigslist if you’re in the market for labor help.

    TaskRabbit FAQs

Should I tip my Tasker? If yes, then what is a fair amount?

You will have the option to tip your Tasker on the TaskRabbit website after the completion of your task. This interface allows you to tip up to 30% of your job’s total cost. No cash ever explicitly has to change hands when booking through this site, but you definitely do have that option. General etiquette is to tip moving help $5 for every hour on the job. That is $10 to $25 for a standard task here.

How do I communicate with my Tasker before the job?

All communication between the Tasker and the client should be limited to the TaskRabbit app and website.  For clients, chat with your Tasker is accessed through your Tasker’s profile. Keeping your dialogue with them solely on the site will establish a paper trail for what is expected during the job. This is key for your own protection.

What if I need more than one worker?

As much of a burden as it may seem, you will simply need to go through the hiring process multiple times. Taskers are prohibited from bringing outside workers to jobs. This is mainly because TaskRabbit cannot guarantee the quality or background of outsiders brought to jobs. It presents a risk to you as a consumer, and to them as a corporation. Unfortunately, you can’t expedite the process by sharing a joint task with multiple workers at once.

Can I expect my Tasker to bring tools or supplies to a job?

As independent contractors, this decision is left solely to the Tasker. Each has their own ways of doing things, with their own equipment. You should communicate with your worker about this well before the start of your job.

Is there a minimum cost when hiring with TaskRabbit?

Yes; there is a one-hour minimum. Your Tasker will be paid for at least one hour, as that is the lowest amount of time which they are allowed to invoice. After the one-hour mark, they will be paid in 15-minute increments.
