We’ve researched dozens of long-distance movers and evaluated their transparency, customer reviews and reputation, pricing and services, and even their industry and legal licensing to help you find and identify the best long-distance movers in the country.  Here’s what we found when it comes to Father and Son.

    Transparency

When it comes to transparency, Father and Son Moving definitely has room for improvement. The company’s website is incredibly difficult to navigate—and while it is filled with claims of awards, we were unable to verify a large number of these claims. For example, Father & Son Moving & Storage claims to be the only company operating in both New York and New Jersey to have been named “Mover of the Decade,” but the moving company does not specify who named them this. There are no outbound links informing customers where they can verify this award, and we were unable to find verification in our review.

Other unsubstantiated claims that we were unable to verify include:

    • Platinum Award for Storage Facility of the Decade (Father & Son Moving & Storage does not specify which company or publication issues this award)
    • Feature as “New York and New Jersey’s Best Moving Company” by “Who’s-Who Mover News” for 16 consecutive years (“Whos-Who” is listed as a well-known vanity publication according to Wikipedia)
    • New York and New Jersey’s only “5 star” rated moving company (Father & Son Moving & Storage does not specify which set of reviews indicate that they have been rated 5 stars. In our review, we found that most third-party review websites offered the long-distance moving service provider an average of 1.3 to 4.0 stars depending on the website)

Researching and verifying these awards might seem like nitpicking—after all, nearly every company claims to have won some kind of award or received special recognition for service. However, it’s important to verify every type of claim that a moving company makes because you’ll be trusting a large number of your things with your mover.

Everyone wants to work with the best movers, and unsubstantiated claims can make it more difficult for movers to choose a reputable moving company. In the future, we’d love to see Father and Son back up their claim of being the best movers by providing links on their website to third-party sites that can verify the awards that they’ve won.

Father and Son do not list the factors that go into the price of its services on its website, so we gave them a call to request a few sample quotes. Loading is included as a standard service, and movers can complete a wide variety of tasks as they charge by the hour. Father and Son is able to provide both binding and non-binding estimates, so you may want to use Father and Son’s services if you aren’t sure whether you’ll be getting rid of additional items before your move.

Though the company claims that they provide disassembly and unpacking services at “no extra charge,” this does not mean that the services are free—they are simply included in the cost that you pay per hour and will increase the overall bill that you receive for your moving services. However, unlike many full-service moving companies, Father and Son do not add fees on top of their hourly rates for these types of services, which can be beneficial if you’re moving with an older family member who cannot pack on their own.

Our experience with Father and Son’s communication was poor. Though we’ll detail a little more about our quote process in the next section, the movers we spoke to seemed to be inconsistent on policies and expectations.

    Cost

When we called Father and Son to get a free quote, we were told that their rates are currently as follows for local moving services (considered to be moves within the New York or New Jersey area).

    • For homes that have 3 bedrooms or fewer: Homes that have 3 or fewer bedrooms typically require only 1 moving truck. Each moving truck provided for these types of small moves are staffed with 2 men, and the rate for 1 truck and 2 movers is $150 an hour.
    • Homes with more than 3 bedrooms: If your home has more than 3 bedrooms, Father and Son will provide you with 1 truck and 4 moving professionals to help speed up the process. Our quoted rate for local moves with more than 3 bedrooms was $200 per hour.
    • Homes with more than 7 bedrooms: For commercial moving services or very large homes with more than 7 bedrooms, Father and Son Moving and Storage informed us that we would need to use 2 trucks and a total of 4 moving professionals.

For long-distance moves outside of this area, Father and Son do not use hourly rates, instead charging by the total weight of the truck. This is a regulation-related practice, and we’re very happy to see that Father and Son is upfront with the fact that their pricing will vary following interstate transport rules. It is unclear if “free-of-charge” packing and disassembly is included with long-term moves.

    Quote Process

It’s difficult to say whether or not Father and Son regularly sticks to these provided estimates because the customer service that we received was confusing. Getting a quote from Father and Son Moving and Storage over the phone was exceptionally frustrating. On our first call, the customer service representative who we spoke with quoted us the above rates but told us that we would have to speak with an estimator to confirm long-distance rates. Our customer service representative told us that their office was too busy to provide a quote or to look up the company’s USDOT number and to call back the next day.

The next day, we called Father and Son again, requesting a quote. After being put on hold, our customer service representative returned to inform us that they were again too busy to connect us with an estimator. The representative told us that we would receive a call the next day to speak with an estimator. As of this writing, we have not received any type of additional contact from Father and Son.

It’s important to note that there are multiple Father and Son locations throughout the New York and New Jersey area and that this isolated experience may not be indicative of the company as a whole. However, we felt that it was important to share our experience in this review to provide insight into what you might be able to expect at this point in the moving process.

    Reputation

On their Better Business Bureau (BBB) profile, Father and Son Moving and Storage received a B+ rating from the review site. This indicates that the company is moderately likely to respond to customer complaints when they receive them. The company is not currently accredited with the Better Business Bureau and has been in business for 36 years according to the BBB. This contradicts the information on the company’s website (which claims that the company was founded in 1917), but it’s possible that BBB dates may be incorrect due to differences in incorporation dates.

Father and Son claims to have 1 million satisfied customers, solidifying their reputation as one of the top providers of local and long-distance moving services in the New York and New Jersey area. Reviews on the company’s website are largely positive—but what are users on third-party review sites like Yelp and the BBB saying? Let’s take a look at a few areas that movers care about the most and what the internet is saying about Father and Son’s service.

    Reputation for Value

Value sentiment for Father and Son is exceptionally poor across multiple sites. Users frequently complain about being overcharged for services or “baited and switched” with a low original offer only to be forced to pay a higher rate to secure their things once they arrived at their new location.

I had a move within 10 miles. I had received a quote from another company for 2 trucks 6 men $2500. Father and Son quoted me the same so I went with them… Long story short the move took 19 hours and cost in excess of $7000. — Lisa C., 2/21/2020, Yelp, 1.0 star.

This company is the worst. we just moved during this pandemic. Quoted one price and when we got to destination, was told it would cost more money and had to pay before they unloaded [the] truck. — Rosanne K., 4/21/2020, BBB, 1.0 star.

One important note: multiple reviewers claim that the company refused to take credit cards as payment, requiring cash or a check on the date of the move. While not a tell-tale sign of a moving scam, cash-only payments are considered a red flag to keep in mind.

    Reputation for Efficiency

Father & Son Movers has a split reputation when it comes to efficiency. While some users claim that their movers took significantly longer than originally quoted, others claim that they were able to get to their new home ahead of schedule. This may be due to a difference in efficiency between regional teams.

These guys are efficient and take great care of everything! Highly recommend using them. — Elise C., September 2020, Google Reviews, 5.0 stars.

They are a bunch of thieves. Didn’t have much to move. Should have taken no more than 4 hours but they stretched it to 10. — Deborah D., 4/17/2021, Yelp, 1.0 star.

    Reputation for Handling with Care

Care and handling is another area where reviews are split. However, we found that, more often than not, previous movers complained about at least 1 item being damaged over the course of their move.

They held my furniture hostage and insisted I pay cash for them to unload it. They broke my bedroom set, damaged my coffee table and hutch, and on top of that they were the rudest people I’ve ever dealt with. — Jackie M., 8/12/2016, Yelp, 1.0 star.

The movers were on time and very careful with all my stuff. — Leannon C., October 2020, Google Reviews, 5.0 stars.

    Reputation for Reliability

One area where reviews seem to be in agreement is the company’s reliability. Most customers who mentioned the company’s timeliness complimented movers on arriving on time and on schedule.

I used Father & Son Moving for my most recent move. It was a breeze! They have great rates, showed up on time, and everything was securely moved. I would use them again and again. — Consumer Affairs’ user “Wyatt,” 11/5/2020, Consumer Affairs, 5.0 stars.

They took great care of all my belongings and had everything done on time! — Helen N., September 2020, Google Reviews, 5.0 stars.
