In this article, we’ll explore these aspects of Allied Van Lines’ movers, so you can stay informed with the best information to choose your mover.
    • Transparency. They are a highly trusted company, with more than 90 years of customer service experience. User reviews show a track record of being up-front with their pricing, so you won’t get slammed with any hidden fees, whether you need packers, or a crew for a full-service, cross-country move.
    • Pricing. AVL’s price points are consistently a little higher (about 10-12%) than other moving companies’ and van lines’ costs across the board. AVL, unlike some other van lines offers help on small-scale moving services. Your local moves could cost as little as $550, while a large cross-country move could cost several thousand dollars. It all depends on your needs as a client.
    • Services. AVL offers unparalleled flexibility of service. Additional services can be procured a la carte style. No single service is tied to another, which allows customers to pick whatever range that best serves their moving experience.
    • Reputation. Allied Van Lines serves as a moving broker, as well as a carrier. AVL themselves has a solid reputation. It is important to note that the small companies which they partner with may not uphold the same standard. Allied Agents, or AVL’s partners in the contracting side of things, vary with region. For this reason, customers need to be aware of who they are really hiring, especially when doing a long-distance move.

    Allied Van Lines’ Transparency

    Transparency On Pricing for Service

When it comes to transparency, communication on both sides of the move is key. This means that you should make every effort to schedule an in-home estimate for a free quote when possible. Once at your home, your relocation assistant will help you go over every room in your home, while listing the services you may need. Upon doing a walkthrough, your assistant will inform you of possible cost, based on weight, distance, supplies and labor used, etc. You will also be asked to choose which other services to use. You can schedule a walkthrough like this at AVL’s website

    Allied Van Lines Transparency

Add-ons, and the quality of them, are determined by the professional movers you use. This is where the client must be wary. Always ask your relocation assistant whether AVF or a subcontractor will be handling your move. If your work is contracted out, you need to do your due diligence and research the company in question.
That said, all reviews point to Allied Van Lines being very up-front about what cost will be.

As is standard when dealing with the moving industry, you should require a fixed estimate, and do your research before signing any contracts.

Clarity on Base Services vs Add-Ons

This is where asking the right questions can save you money, and smooth out your moving process. For example:
    • What is included in your base price?
    • Which local moving companies, if any, will be assisting on this move?
    • How much does full-service packing cost?
    • What number of boxes and supplies are included in my move?
    • How much would unpacking at my new home cost, if needed?
    • Is there a fee for furniture disassembly and re-assembly?
Josephine Shanks' International Van Lines Review
Our move went FLAWLESSLY! They were super professional and had tons of experience. They were quick and accommodating. I would absolutely move with IVL again.
    - Josephine Shanks
You should have a list of questions like this handy before your customer service representative knocks on your door. In the moment, it can be easy to forget what the right questions to ask are. This could leave you, the customer, less than satisfied with your in-home estimate. Writing an informal script and choosing a few bullet points to stick to will help you out immeasurably in the long run.
Allied Van Lines uses their transparency as a main selling point. If you ask for a service on the front end of the move, you will get it, with a clear price listed.

    Communication & Expectations

The reviews for Allied Van Lines across all platforms indicate that your moving experience will be as good as your relocation assistant and Allied Agent. If they are communicative and attentive, and answer all of your questions during your walkthrough, you will most likely have a smooth move.
If your relocation assistant avoids certain questions, or glosses over seemingly vital aspects of your move, then it could be a bad indicator. Namely, that the local agents they are partnered with may not have the best reputation. Once again, you should do research, and avoid signing any contracts until you have gotten multiple move estimates from different companies. Most people who procured AVL’s services as the direct carrier on their move have reported great service and overall satisfaction.
As an added bonus, Allied Van Lines offers live shipment tracking, so you will always know exactly where your items are when between destinations, as long as you have a working internet connection. Moving is stressful, even in the best of times. Any time you can put your mind at ease during that process, it’s a big win.

    Hiring Processes

As is the case with any larger operators within the moving industry, your ideal first move should be to schedule an estimate online. Reviews indicate that local relocation assistants have a speedy turnaround time between receiving a request for a walkthrough, and actually contacting clients to schedule it.
Your AVL representative will walk you through every factor that will impact the final cost of your move: namely, distance, weight, extra services or add-ons, and ease of access at each location. You will then be provided with a binding estimate, based on these factors. You are then free to shop around and get other quotes from other companies. Be mindful of the difference between binding and non-binding estimates here. A binding estimate is just that – binding. Your quoted price will not move, unless the duration or weight of your move changes. A non-binding estimate, however, is a valuation based on less precise metrics, and is subject to change if you add items on moving day.
You should keep in mind that moving is a seasonal business, which peaks in the summer months. The availability of your moving company of choice can be greatly reduced based on this so, if you plan on moving in August, for example, you should book well in advance. AVL has a handy list of guidelines for this process at www.allied.com, for reference.

    General Policies

    Damaged Goods
Beyond any insurance coverage, Allied Van Lines has a dedicated damage claim form here. The claims window is set at nine months, from the time that your movers finish your relocation. You will be asked to provide proof of damaged items for any claim to be validated. For that reason, any repairs should be withheld until after your dedicated claims adjustor renders a decision.

    Cancelled Moves
Cancellations happen. If you need to postpone or totally cancel a scheduled move, you should inform your relocation assistant and Allied Agent independently. You may also want to request a confirmation of your decision in writing, otherwise, you could be on the hook for costs associated with your movers traveling to your home on the original move date. Officially, AVL lists no cancellation fee on their website. No reputable company should charge a fee for anything beyond services rendered.
    Client Rights and Responsibilities
Your rights and responsibilities as a client are readily outlined on AVL’s website, and on the FMCSA website. Both resources outline similar information, but they are the client’s responsibility to be familiar with.
    Lost Item
As your AVL movers arrive to pick up your items, they will inventory everything via a bill of lading. Even if you packed boxes yourself, AVL will often label them in detail before your move. They will check off items on the same list at the unload, then ask for you to check and sign the list. Once you have signed the bill of lading after your move, services are considered rendered, which could nullify any filed claims on missing items. Stressful as it may be, you need to remain attentive through the entire process of your move.
    Delivery Delays
Your first line of protection against delays on long-distance moves should be to pack a few essential boxes, as well as changes of clothing and toiletries, to be kept with you. Many large van lines moving multiple homes cross-country in the same trailer will experience delays. For this reason, AVL will provide clients with a delivery window, rather than a specific day. Given the number of potential reasons for a delay, claims involving late delivery are difficult to push through. Planning for the worst is your best bet, regardless of which company you use.

What does Allied Van Lines Cost?

Allied Van Lines charges $99 per hour, for two movers and a truck, with each extra mover costing $36 per hour. They have a four hour minimum, with up to an hour of travel time to and from their base office built into the cost. That last bit will depend entirely on where your home is, relative to AVL’s nearest location. This means that, for the most DIY-centric move, you will have to pay a minimum of $396 to go a short distance.

Allied Van Lines Cost-Value vs. Competitors

    Allied Van Lines
    Industry Average
    0 20 40 60 80 100
For such local moves, the weight and volume of your items will not factor into the cost. In these scenarios, movers will handle a single job at a time, and any extra fuel expenditure or wear on the truck is either irrelevant or non-existent.
Long-distance moves are not billed at a traditional hourly rate, as many other factors come into play. The cost of moving a four-bedroom home from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Los Angeles, California (800 miles) with Allied Van Lines comes with an average expected cost of $6,500 – $9,000.

    Full-Service Packing

Full-service packing includes hourly rates for all of your movers and packers, and moving supplies, at a substantial markup. You get convenience in return for the increased cost but, if you’re moving on a budget, it may not be your best option. Allied Van Lines movers for packing cost $36 per man-hour, which is more than reasonable, given that the use of and insurance for the moving van will not come into play for this service.
The moving supplies will have the most immediate impact on your wallet. A dish barrel – a specially made, double-walled box made for fragile and kitchen items – will run you about $17 apiece when buying directly from AVL. That exact same box costs $6 at U-Haul. This is by far the most convenient option, but you will have to pay a high premium to get it. For large long-distance moves, or for corporate relocation, full-service packing is far and away the best option.

    Basic Liability Coverage

AVL carries the same basic coverage that every reputable moving company offers as a feature within its base cost. So, it costs you nothing beyond the price of the move. You get $0.60 of coverage, per pound, per item, built right into your relocation cost. Buyer beware here – should you decline any additional coverage, this is all you will receive for any broken or damaged item, no matter how obviously valuable. The ins and outs of insurance are outlined here. Anyone unsure of what their rights as a moving client are should peruse those guidelines before proceeding.

    Full Valuation Coverage

No matter how far your next move may take you, full valuation coverage is worth considering if you are transporting anything of great value to you. Allied Van Lines offers this service, under the name Extra Care Protection. This premium cost additional service will pay for itself in added peace of mind for any longer interstate move or international relocation. You will have to pay $0.80 per $100 of coverage, at a minimum of $5 per pound of your total move weight. Therefore, if your move has a total weight of 5,000 pounds, it will cost you $200 for full valuation coverage, for the duration of your move.

    Quotes & Estimates

Moving quotes and estimates from AVL are free. Most moving companies offer this as an easy way to initiate contact with as wide a client base as possible. If an in-person estimate does not appeal to you, AVL’s InstaQuote feature makes getting an online estimate easy. As far as estimates go, Allied Van Lines will offer a fixed price if the client agrees to stick to a defined inventory. Any substantial amount of added goods will result in a price bump, due to higher weight and time spent loading. When getting an estimate from any moving company, it is important to keep this in mind in the time between your estimate and moving day.

All other specialized services, like custom crating, auto and boat moving, and storage should be discussed with a relocation assistant. Due to their custom nature, costs can vary greatly.

A Review of AVL’s Moving Service

Allied Van Lines is both a carrier and a moving broker. While they retain a large fleet of their own trucks and dedicated employees at every level of the moving industry, they contract a great deal of their work out to partnered companies around the United States, as well as internationally.

    Basic Services & Offerings

    • Loading and unloading: This is something that all moving companies include in their base price. Most large van lines have to handle the loading and unloading themselves due to their insurance coverages.
    • Furniture disassembly and reassembly: Moving crew chiefs and movers in general will have a set of basic tools with them. These are meant to help with furniture assembly, and other minor tasks. When moving with Allied Van Lines, this service comes at no extra cost.
    • Basic liability coverage: Like all moving companies, AVL includes basic insurance in their base price. $0.60 per pound, per item is standard across the board, but you may want to buy better coverage if you’re moving valuable items.
    • Live tracking: This feature is available at no extra cost with your move. It allows you to check in on the status of your goods, no matter where they are, in real time.
    • Online checklists and tips: If it’s your first time moving, Allied Van Lines has you covered, with checklists and moving tips on their website. The entire process can be overwhelming at times, and AVL has done their part to make things a little easier for their clients.

    Additional Services

    • Full-service packing: For larger moves, and for clients who would pay more for convenience, this packing option is available upon request.
      • Fragile-only packing: A far less all-encompassing packing option – this gives clients peace of mind that their breakable items will remain safe, while avoiding having to pay to pack their entire home.
      • Full valuation coverage: Clients with more valuable items would be advised to purchase this additional insurance on their goods. Pricing details are outlined in the above section on costs. For most antique or expensive items require more than the baseline rate of $0.60 per pound.
      • Shuttle services: This is meant as an insurance measure for hard-to-access homes. AVL will contract out services to get a smaller moving truck or sprinter van on the job in order to transport goods from your old home to the truck, or into your new home. This will lead to an inflated cost, but sometimes, it can’t be helped.
      • Auto and boat transport: This is a service which Allied Van Lines is equipped to handle. However most customer reviews lead prospective clients to the conclusion that finding another, dedicated auto or boat hauler would be cheaper.
      • Custom crating: This applies mainly to moving antiques, but is a personalized service that AVL offers.
      • Unpacking and debris removal: This service will rarely be included in a flat rate for any move, as it can take a team of movers many hours to unpack a larger home. This service, at least from Allied Van Lines, will be done at the same $36 hourly rate per mover as the packing service listed above.
      • Appliance disconnection and reconnection: This is typically done for a one-time fee. The most common figures cited are between $100 and $200.
      • Storage: Allied Van Lines offers storage, but at a premium price. Customer reviews recommend that clients go through the extra hassle to rent their own storage units instead.

    Considering Allied Van Lines’ Reputation

Allied Van Lines has been in business since 1928, and has steadily grown since. It became a publicly traded company in 1968, and now operates as a smaller arm of the larger company, SIRVA, Inc. They maintain a high output, having conducted 750,000 moves in the last 15 years, both in the United States and abroad.

On their own website, AVL boasts a 96% satisfaction rate, and shows that they have won the Women’s Choice Award for excellence in moving every year since 2015. Independent customer reviews, however, offer a slightly different look. Customer sentiment seems to be a total mixed bag. Consumer Affairs reviews are almost entirely positive, with clients citing professional behavior and degree of care with their items. On the other hand, Better Business Bureau largely pans AVL. The conduct of the workers listed is totally opposite of the other set of reviews.
When reading a little deeper, the trends are easy to pick out. Work done directly by AVL is mostly high-level. Their discretion in choosing partner companies to contract work out to is the main issue. Positive reviews directly cite Allied Van Lines. Most negative reviews cite their contracted help.
Potential clients can definitely have a good experience with AVL, but research is necessary. Allied Van Lines themselves has a great reputation and many satisfied customers, which make them worth their price tag at 12% above industry average. Their partners, however, may not be. When considering Allied Van Lines, it would be best to look at their reviews in your immediate area. This will give you a proper feel for the kind of service you will be paying for.

    International Van Lines FAQs

Are there any items AVL can't take in their trucks?

Just like any other moving company, Allied Van Lines will not move any cleaning supplies, toxic chemicals, flammable liquids, or perishable goods.
AVL also generally shies away from moving pianos, with some exceptions. Super heavy or bulky single items may be better moved by a separate company.

How is the cost of my move calculated?

For long-distance moves, a combination of weight and distance are used to determine your final cost. For shorter, intrastate, or in-town moves, you will typically pay a flat hourly rate, along with fees for any additional services you may need.

What kind of insurance coverages do you offer?

Allied Van Lines’ basic liability coverage comes with the cost of every move, and covers you up to $0.60 per pound, per item. This is industry standard, but you can opt for full valuation coverage, at an additional fee. As outlined above, that coverage costs about $200 for 5,000 pounds of household goods.

What are AVL's accepted methods of payment, and when should I pay my movers?

All payments must be made before unloading your items, per moving company tariff provisions. You can pay with cash, money order, or certified check if paying at the time of the unload. If you must pay with a credit card, payment may need to be taken at the load-up, to ensure that the payment goes through in time.
