What to Look for in a Long-Distance Moving Company

As you start planning your move, here are some of the most essential things to look for in a quality mover:

  • License. Next, all movers conducting moves across state lines are regulated by the FMCSA. Under this governing body, such movers are required to carry an active USDOT number. You can use this number to research a company’s complaint history and license information in the FMCSA database.
  • Insurance. All moving companies are required to carry workers’ compensation insurance. This protects clients in the event of a work-related injury during a move. They must also carry released liability coverage, which provides for some baseline compensation if your household goods are lost or damaged. At $0.60 per pound, per item, this coverage is very basic, but is industry standard. Movers will also offer valuation coverage at an added cost as well.
  • Services. Service availability varies from company to company and even from location to location with the same company. Be sure to speak with a representative and ask them directly about the services you need for your move.
  • Reviews. Moving company reviews can help you to learn more about companies than they have presented on their site. You can find out about pricing policies, common complaints, and more. Be sure to check reviews for the specific city you’re moving from.

Michigan Moving Regulations

Movers in the state are regulated by the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC). The MPSC requires all moving companies to publicly display its tariffs (charges) for each service they provide within its home offices. Here are some other important Michigan moving regulations you should be aware of:

  • Regulated Rates. Moves under 40 miles in Michigan are not regulated. Movers can charge by the hour and negotiate freely. Moves over 40 miles, however, are regulated. Pricing for long-distance moves is based on weight and mileage, with rate caps based on published tariffs.
  • Estimates. The MPSC requires a non-binding estimate for long-distance moves. This means that your final cost may be different than what’s provided in the quote process.
  • Insurance. Michigan movers must meet the federal minimum requirement of 60 cents per pound for carrier’s liability insurance.
  • Claims. If you experience damage to your property, you have up to 30 days to file a claim with the company, which must be submitted in writing.

Clients should feel free to ask for proof of the above registrations and insurance policies before booking with any mover. Reputable companies will be able to provide it upon request.

Our Rating Methodology

At Pro Mover Reviews, we are committed to providing our readers with comprehensive and unbiased information on each provider that we review. Our methodology is a step-by-step process that ensures we maintain your trust through transparency and data that is backed up through routine check-ins. Our staff has spent hundreds of hours reviewing dozens of local, long-distance, and international moving companies to bring you our recommendation for the best moving companies in the US. We then narrowed down our findings based on criteria that we find to be the most helpful for you to choose the best moving company for your needs.

Our Rating Categories:

  • Company Transparency
  • Pricing + Cost
  • Services Offered
  • Overall Reputation

While there are many sites out there that compare movers, we believe our rigorous standards give us more insights into company performance and better data to share with our community.  For each moving company we check for:

  • Confirmed Licensing with the DOT
  • Updated & Verified Business Registration
  • Real & Recent Consumer Reviews
  • Industry Ratings and BBB Complaints
  • Accuracy of Online Quotes
  • Services Provided & Total Service Area
  • Pricing & Services vs. Competitors

From here we created a comprehensive, 100 point, rating scale based on the following factors:

  • Moving services (25): Companies that offer more flexibility in their services are rated higher.
  • Coverage of services (5): The more items a moving company can handle, the higher the score.
  • Pricing (25): We compare this to the industry average when rating pricing.
  • Trustworthiness (25): We comb through hundreds of reviews and check on BBB ratings to determine the trustworthiness of a company.
  • State availability (5): Finding a moving company in your state can be a challenge depending on where you are located. The more states covered, the higher the score.
  • Customer service (10): Is this moving company responsive? Do they respond quickly to issues that are brought to their attention? Are they helpful in answering questions? All of these factors are considered when rating customer service.
  • Additional benefits (5): Moving companies can sometimes offer special promotions or deals when contracting them for a move. The companies with the most benefit scored higher.

Of the dozens of different moving companies that we’ve reviewed, we’ve broken down the best long-distance moving companies in Michigan. To keep our ratings and data current, we have a full-time researcher who collects (and regularly updates) more than 100 specific data points from each company to help us compare them on key factors such as coverage, cost, service, and dependability. This list is ever-changing, as companies will update policies and procedures, and we will change our information accordingly.

Michigan Long-Distance Moving Company FAQs

What are the best places to live in Michigan?

Despite the auto industry not having the presence that it used to in the state, Michigan still has plenty of opportunities for new residents. Plentiful jobs in other sectors, 3,000 miles of coastline on the Great Lakes, and 10 million acres of public land for recreation make it a scenic and financially responsible place to live. Around the cities of Detroit and Lansing, there are many nice suburbs with a lot to offer. The Oakland County towns of Birmingham, Novi, and Beverly Hills are perfect for raising a family, with great schools and safe neighborhoods. If larger cities are more your speed, then Ann Arbor may be a great fit for you.

What is the best time of year to move in Michigan?

During the summer months, there is always a rush to book moves. No matter where you live, May to September is peak moving season. That said, Michigan winters can be brutal, particularly in the North and the Upper Peninsula. The extremes that come with both seasons can hinder your workers. Booking in the Spring or Autumn may be the best way to ensure a smooth move, as far as weather and work conditions are concerned.

How much does a long-distance move typically cost?

Long-distance moves typically cost between $2,000 and $5,000. If you go the DIY route and rent a moving truck, your moving costs will fall on the lower end of this spectrum. Full-service moves, with packing services or auto shipping included can easily exceed $10,000, however. Determining an accurate price early will come down to how fully you disclose lists of inventory and services required to moving company representatives when you get a quote.
