How to Plan a Last-Minute Move
When planning a last-minute move, you may be limited to phone estimates and online research, rather than in-person quotes or vetting. That said, you should still seek to verify the required registrations and insurance policies noted below:
- FMCSA Registration: All moving companies conducting moves in multiple states (or across state lines) have to maintain active registration with the FMCSA. This body requires that all movers have USDOT and MC numbers. These can be used to look up a given mover’s registration status and complaint history through this link.
- State Level Registration: Most states will have their own regulations and requirements for local movers, which you should look into before booking. You can start your research here.
- Proper Insurance: All moving companies have to maintain multiple insurance policies in order to legally operate. Aside from vehicle and cargo insurance, movers must also have workers’ compensation and released liability insurance. Be sure to ask about the insurance options available, as coverage varies from company to company.
- Same-Day & Last-Minute Policies: Some movers may charge an extra fee for same-day or last-minute moves. Be sure to ask when booking so you won’t be surprised when you see your bill.
- Reviews: When vetting any company in a service industry, customer reviews are an extremely important resource. Reputable sources for these include Google, Yelp, BBB, and more. Be sure to look at reviews for your local area, especially if you’re just moving across town.
Our Rating Methodology
At Pro Mover Reviews, we are committed to providing our readers with comprehensive and unbiased information on each provider that we review. Our methodology is a step-by-step process that ensures we maintain your trust through transparency and data that is backed up through routine check-ins. Our staff has spent hundreds of hours reviewing dozens of local, long-distance, and international moving companies to bring you our recommendation for the best moving companies in the US. We then narrowed down our findings based on criteria that we find to be the most helpful for you to choose the best moving company for your needs.
Our Rating Categories:
- Company Transparency
- Pricing + Cost
- Services Offered
- Overall Reputation
While there are many sites out there that compare movers, we believe our rigorous standards give us more insights into company performance and better data to share with our community. For each moving company we check for:
- Confirmed Licensing with the DOT
- Updated & Verified Business Registration
- Real & Recent Consumer Reviews
- Industry Ratings and BBB Complaints
- Accuracy of Online Quotes
- Services Provided & Total Service Area
- Pricing & Services vs. Competitors
From here we created a comprehensive, 100-point, rating scale based on the following factors:
- Moving services (25): Companies that offer more flexibility in their services are rated higher.
- Coverage of services (5): The more items a moving company can handle, the higher the score.
- Pricing (25): We compare this to the industry average when rating pricing.
- Trustworthiness (25): We comb through hundreds of reviews and check on BBB ratings to determine the trustworthiness of a company.
- State availability (5): Finding a moving company in your state can be a challenge depending on where you are located. The more states covered, the higher the score.
- Customer service (10): Is this moving company responsive? Do they respond quickly to issues that are brought to their attention? Are they helpful in answering questions? All of these factors are considered when rating customer service.
- Additional benefits (5): Moving companies can sometimes offer special promotions or deals when contracting them for a move. The companies with the most benefit scored higher.
Of the dozens of different moving companies that we’ve reviewed, we’ve broken down the best last-minute movers in your area. Last-Minute Moving FAQs
Are there higher costs associated with booking a move at the last minute?
Depending on the overall availability of your moving carrier or container company, there may be associated fees or inflated costs when booking within a week of your move. This can be especially true during the peak of moving season, between May and September.
Should I purchase insurance for my move?
If you’re going to be transporting goods of high value, then you should strongly consider purchasing valuation coverage for your goods. The released liability coverage that all movers provide with the base cost of service only covers your goods at a limited rate. Any antiques or valuables should be properly insured.
Are there discounts offered for early booking?
On occasion, you may be able to get a discount when you book ahead of time. But most of the time, there are not discounts beyond simply avoiding last-minute fees.
